Most prominently, addiction has also been described as a kind of attachment disorder (Flores, 2001). Substance dependent patients often show to be anxiously or ambivalently attached to their parents. What we learned from Bowlby and colleaques about Attachment and Bonding, we can find a lot of these described mechanisms within the setting of a therapeutic community. Within the therapeutic community it should be possible for the patient to exchange dysfunctional attachment patterns. A secure attachment system also means, that we are able to trust people and that we can be trusted. The dynamics and growth of attachment can be studied comprehensivly within the setting of a therapeutic community.
